Project Description
1. About the NGO CCZ has been in existence since 1914. It was first called the General Missionary Conference and its main responsibility was to promote cooperation between the missionary societies in areas such as education, health and religious broadcasting. The name was later changed to Christian Council of Northern Rhodesia in 1944. At the eve of independence in 1963, there was pressing need for the Council to begin responding to the growing social demands of the local people. Upon independence in 1964 the CCNR changed its name to Christian Council of Zambia serving as an ecumenical organization to strengthen Christian unity and promotion of social justice, peace and development. In achieving its goals, CCZ devised a vision aimed at responding to the immediate challenges of a newly independent nation. Over the years, through this vision, the Council s scope of work began to expand with critical areas of concern such as education, youth, disaster risk reduction, climate change and natural resource management. CCZ has more than 5 years of experience in offering short and long term training programs in climate change and disaster risk reduction. CCZ is also a focal point organization for: we have faith - act for climate justice campaign. This is a campaign for faith based organization towards a fair deal at the COP 18. CCZ has been involved in community based engagements with the National Disaster Management Unit under the vice president s office. CCZ has trained 5 operational disaster risk reduction church committees that work hand in hand with the national satellite committees. These are the committees carrying out climate change adaptation activities in the communities. In 2009 CCZ carried out a research that produced the prosperity into death report on uranium mining. This resulted into a proposed uranium policy. We have currently engaged a consultant called Sustainable Environmental Urban Solutions Consult to carry out a review of the Ionization Radiation ACT of 2005 and associated legislation on Uranium mining. 2.
