Project Description
Project Description
1. Maldives has a favorable climate and other agro-ecological factors that give the chance of all-year-round production capability for some fruits, vegetables and flowers. The demand for vegetable and flowers products from the dynamic tourism industry and local consumption is high, however, investments and entrepreneurship in the sector is poor. 2. Training Course on Basic Agriculture and Hydroponics will be conducted in Holhudhoo. Participants will be given information and practical training on Basic Agriculture and Floriculture which includes understanding the types of diseases the plants come across and knowing what is required to improve the health of the plant. The main areas of the training will include basic needs of the plants plant physiology and biology, soil & land preparation, plant nutrition, composting, plant propagation, nursery care/ nursery management, irrigation, plant pest and diseases in the Maldives. 3. Growing vegetables and fruit in the backyard will be promoted using traditional methods of home gardens (soil based plantation) and also using recent technologies of hydroponics. hydroponic gardening generate high-density maximum crop yield, more importantly, this method is known for more efficient use of water and fertilizers, minimal use of land area, and the isolation of the crop from the soil greatly reduce problems of diseases thus minimizing use of pesticides. 4. Project will also teach techniques of Floriculture to selected participants, so that they can maintain both indigenous and modern flower gardens at home with the aim for the participants to be interested in Floriculture so that flowers such as orchids can be grown at home and sold locally to the islands and nearby resorts. 5. This project covers focal areas of the elimination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) through community-based approaches. The proposed project covers some of activities such as promoting access to and the transfer of environmentally sound alternative technologies, products, and management practices (including indigenous knowledge (ii) demonstrating viable and cost-effective alternatives to POPs products; (iii) organizing capacity building workshops on POPs; (iv) promoting organic farming; (v) generating business opportunities. 6. Maldives has a favorable climate, ample land and labor as well as reasonable water resources that can create ample opportunities for agriculture and floriculture production. The agro-ecological factors of the country give the chance of all-year-round production capability. The current government has a renewed commitment to activate agriculture and related industries by creating conducive environment for foreign and local investors. The government is also committed to exploit the linkages between agriculture and industry through the private sector development. Therefore, this project helps the government initiatives and policies in reducing the poverty and also empowering the women in the island community to earn extra income to their households.
