Project Description
Based on VRA assessment was conducted by CRID on 04th-05th October 2012 at two villages (Cheaklang and Chke Kon villages), Cheaklang commune, Svay Antor district, Prey Veng province. There had 65 participants attended in VRA assessment, including 35 women, 10 local authorities and 2 community people in order to design a project responding to needs and problems in the target rural area. Regarding to the result of VRA shown that most villagers in target area are facing to negative impacts of climate change. Water shortage is the main problem which is leading to the food shortage, problem of family health, farm, crop, and animal raising in the target area for long time. On the other hand, many local people have limited knowledge of the agriculture technique and they still practice their traditional rice growing, fertilizer using, and agriculture poison using. These things make low harvesting from two-three tons per- hectare to one ton per-hectare that very affect to poor family economic and food security every year. Responding to these problems, CRID s project will help the poor farmers, women headed household to benefit the from project activities: 1- Rehabilitating an old canal (1,400 meters) for water irrigation and it will become a rescued canal of small dry season in the rainy season. It is to irrigate on farmland over 320.65 hectares of 250 families in five villages in two communes (Seang Kveang and Cheaklang) in collaboration with Prey Veng provincial DoWRAM. 2- Forming a canal management committee with the target area members (there are 4 members, at least one woman) to play an important role on the canal management, water using, and water management. 3- Providing Trainings on System of Rice Intensification (SRI) for 80 target families (45% of women) in 8 villages in Cheaklang commune to learn about (SRI) in order to let them adapting to the climate change. 4- Selecting 16 families (50% of women) from 8 villages (two families per-village) to practice the new rice seed and make a rice bank in Cheaklang commune for spread out the rice seed to target area. 5- Forming four saving groups for helping the members to have capital to assist the new and existing business: animal raising, vegetable growing. Project will train them on saving group principle, cash management, loan, and saving process. Project Goal By late 2013, 320 families are capable to adapt to vulnerability of raining patterns in communities through rehabilitating canal and providing agriculture technique which can adapt to drought in two communes, Cheaklang and Seangkvang, Prey Veng province). Outcomes: a). 240 families in 4 villages adapt to climate change with canal rehabilitation of 1,400 metres long). The canal can irrigate 320.65 hectares. b). 80 families in 8 villages in Cheaklang commune, Svay Antor district, increased rice yield from two-four tons/ hectare after training SRI. c). 80 families (60% of women) can adapt to drought in community by creating four new saving group to make new job in their families. Outputs: 1). A group of water management committee will be formed to play main roles on canal management, water sharing, and water using. (There are four members, at least one woman) 2). By late March, 2013, in collaboration with Prey Veng provincial DoWRAM, a 1,400 meters canal will be rehabilitated with two dams along the canal). It can irrigate farm land about 320.65 hectares with 250 families in five villages of two communes. 3). 80 farmers from 8 villages will be provided 8 training courses on SRI and 16 demonstration of rice planting will be done by voluntary families to compare SRI with traditional growing. 4) A new rice bank will be established in Cheaklang commune with 80 members in order to ensure the sustainable rice using. 5). Four saving groups will be formed and trained about financial management. Main Project Activities 1) Form a group of committee with four members (one female) to play manage canal and water use. 2) In collaboration with Prey Veng provincial DoWRAM, rehabilitate an existing canal of 1,400 meter long, top width 6meters, bottom width 2 meters, and 2 meters depth, to store water for wet season rice over 320.65 hectares by 250 households in Sean Kveang and Cheaklang commune 3) Provide training on improved agriculture technique and climate resistant rice seed for 80 target participants, 40 females, which will collaborate with Provincial Department of Agriculture (PDA). 4) Select 16 households to demonstrate four new rice seed promoted by Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (MAFF), and establishment of the rice bank for the commune to contribute to sharing new rice seed to grow both inside and outside the target area. 5) Form four saving groups in the project target area. Moreover, the project will provide integrated agriculture technique, including home gardening, chicken, duck, pig, fish raising along with composting techniques.
