Project Description
Bidung geog is located to the northwest of Trashigang Dzong and is bound by Bartsham, Phongmey, and Shongphu and Radhi geog of Trashigang and is further bounded by Yalanggeog of TrashiYangtse Dzongkhag. Bidung Geog is located 33km from Trashigang Dzong covering an area of 47.6 sq km. (LUPP, 1995) located at an altitude of 1200-3000masl with chirpine and broadleaved forest. The watershed is the area of land that drains or sheds water into a specific receiving water body, such as a lake or a river. As rainwater or melted snow runs downhill in the watershed, it collects and transports sediment and other materials and deposits them into the receiving water body. As a result of increasing population, pressures on resources have increased and watershed degradation has become a worldwide concern. Watershed degradation effects have represented a serious threat not only to the environment but also to the survival of millions of people living in upland as well as downstream areas. Recognizing the importance of conservation of upland areas, especially in most developing Countries whose economies depend predominately on agriculture, over the last few decades Watershed management has received increasing attention from countries themselves, as well as from concerned international and regional organizations. While technical analysis relates watershed degradation including geo physical and ecological changes due to over utilization of resources. People participation becomes a major challenge where only limited resources are available and can only be effective if a give and take mechanism is followed i.e.(government to invest in resources required for watershed and the community to managed the water the watershed). Without these mechanisms, it becomes less likely to achieved community participation in the management. The most critical concerns in the geog were the degradation of forest, soil and water sources. These are linked with human actions, as it hinder in agriculture farming practices and water management. Based on the recommendations of various reports referenced above on the consultations with the community of Bidung geog and on the cross cutting challenges, several approach shall benefit the total household of 429 from the adoption for the management of the watershed The nearby watershed community solely depends on subsistence agriculture and raring of livestock for their livelihood. With increasing human and cattle population, the pressure on limited resource increased, ultimately leading to their depletion.
