Bio-diversity

The objective of this project is to provide skills and techniques to rural women to identify alternative sources of living and avoid relying heavily on the forest for livelihood, thereby saving the forest from losing its biodiversity and fresh ecosystem. As a result of this project, women in Rivercess are expected to Have knowledge on alternative livelihood activities that can generate income Identify alternative livelihood activities for implementation (individually or collectively) Network and share experience for improvement in their activities. Liberia lies within the Upper Guinea forest belt of West Africa which is one of the severely threatened biodiversity hotspots. The Liberian forest serves as habitat for large amount of plants and animal species and is also a unique ecological niche for some of the rarest species in the world. In addition, the forest is vital to food security, rural health and the promotion and advancement of cultural practices in Liberia. It is also believe to abound with thousand of different types of flowering plants which are medicinal. Maintaining such unique makeup should be of primary concern to all. It is against this backdrop that the Foundation for Community Initiatives seeks support to work with women in Rivercess County to participate in efforts aimed at conserving the biodiversity and maintaining the fresh ecosystems of the forest in that part of the Country.
