The overall goal of this project proposal, in terms of the COMPACT Project Strategy , is to support the overall 2001-2003 BFCA Capacity-Building for Self-Sustainability initiative through community-based educational interventions. Specifically, the project provided for the following activities: 1. Employ a full time Training Coordinator to oversee and implement all education and awareness activities in the 2001 2003 BFCA Development Programme. 2. Conduct four - (4) training workshops in Belize City, San Pedro, Placentia and Punta Gorda for a total of one hundred - (100) selected stakeholders (i.e. community leaders and youth from all member cooperative communities) in use of email and the Internet services. 3. In collaboration with relevant stakeholders (such as the Ministry of Education, CZMA/I, MBRSP, COMPACT, and UB) collect and reproduce one hundred - (100) sets of teacher resource materials on coastal marine resources and ecosystems. Resource materials will be distributed at workshops described below at 4. 4. With a special focus on Monkey River/Punta Negra/Hopkins in Southern Belize and Sarteneja/Copper Bank/Chunox in Northern Belize, replicate Sustainable Fishing Training Workshops carried out previously with GEF/SGP funding. Workshops will focus on Marine Protected Area (MPA) awareness, participation in biodiversity preservation and sustainability as well as continue to educate and inform fishermen and their communities on BFCA activities through regular membership meetings.
