Project Description
The project is inspired by the UN Global environmental Facility (Small Grants Program) conducted in the area by Chengaose Foundation Trust. The project aims to minimize damage to rivers and natural water ways by persuading people to move their vegetables gardens and other water dependent activities from river banks by providing water sources on homesteads. Many people, including the farmers in the area have realized the positive impact of this program in minimizing river siltation, land degradation by making water more available and easily accessible throughout the year. Unfortunately the grant was too small to achieve full impact and only covered the main river in the district and yet far more damage to the water network is coming from the tributaries and water channels. Madziwa Communal Farmers Club after attending workshops held by Chengaose Foundation Trust would like to continue to persuade people to move their activities from Kasoro and Zisokwe Rivers. The rivers are now choked by gardens, brickmoulding projects and wells which are located on the riverbanks. The proposed project aims to work with 15 households in the two wards 5 and 25 to erect 15 water points (13 with hand pumps and 2 with windmill driven pumps). Each water point will supply water to at least four other households. The project proposes to establish water point committees who will manage the pumping of water into the tank as well as maintenance. At each water point will be constructed a water trough for domestic animals away from the water taps. The elevated tanks will enable the water to be drawn into homesteads to be used in water dependant livelihoods activities such as vegetables gardens, poultry and piggery. The managed water troughs will minimize the damage caused by animals such as cattle to the river bank as these routes or pathways eventually damage soil cover. The availability of water at homesteads will also enable households to plant wood lots around their homesteads which will help in improving soil cover. The soil in this area is being damaged by white ants which proliferate in these long dry spells in the year. Using the water to grow vegetables right through the year will minimize the activities of the termites. The project will undertake training in water point management, planting of trees and fence making to protect homesteads from domestic animals. It will undertake training in the proper breeding of indigenous chickens, goats and pigs for commercial purposes by linking them with markets, so they do not cause as much damage as they are doing in their semi wild state. The outreach of the programme will be 15 water points which will provide portable water to direct 15 households. Each household will have an average of 8 people and each water point will be open for use for at least 8 to 10 households meaning a total beneficiary to 1320 people. The community will contribute to the project through provision of labor for borehole drilling, installation of windmills and water pipes. They will also provide construction material such as bricks for borehole lining, trough building. The total amount requested from GEF/SGP is USD 49962.15 whereby Madziwa Communal Farmer s Club will contribute a total amount of USD22500, other organizations USD 8060 and the community USD 5500.The total cost of the project is USD 86017. The funds are going to be used for drilling and installing 15 water points, 13 deep wells with pressure hand pumps and tanks2 boreholes with windmill driven pumps and each carrying 4 water tanks, trainings and seminars, administration, baseline survey, monitoring and evaluation, project development and documentation. PROJECT GOAL: Reducing pressure on Kasoro, Mupfurudzi and Zisokwe River networks from competing land uses in the wider landscape and reclamation of degraded land in Madziwa Communal Lands through sustainable use of water sources and improved land conservation initiatives. PROJECT OBJECTIVES: To reduce siltation in Zisokwe and Kasoro river systems by moving livelihoods projects from rivers to homesteads. To minimize land degradation through proper land husbandry, community fire management teams and controlled animal movement. To provide portable water on homesteads for woodlots projects and for the sustainable use on moved livelihoods project to prevent people going back and pollute the rivers. Proposed Project Activities: OBJECTIVE1: To reduce siltation in Zisokwe, Kasoro and Mupfurudzi river systems by moving livelihoods projects from rivers to homesteads. 1.1Relocate livelihoods activities from river banks to homesteads42 households doing vegetable gardening and gold panning to be moved to homesteads and 10 households being involved in brick moulding activities to be also moved to homesteads 1.2River rehabilitation Awareness campaigns and use of Indigenous Knowledge Systems(IKS) by the community in conserving water ways 1.3Gully filling by MFC and the community at large and stone pitching ANTICIPATED RESULTS: 1.1 Restored riverbanks Indicator: A total of 7 hectares of land to be rehabilitated. 1.2Beneficiaries equipped with knowledge on negative effects of stream bank cultivation and use of indigenous knowledge systems Indicator: One workshop to beheld and 30 participants to be involved 1.3Reduced siltation of the rivers and land damage Indicator.12 gullies will be rehabilitated and a total area to be rehabilitated will be 1.3ha OBJECTIVE 2: To minimize land degradation through proper lan
