GOAL To increase awareness, participation, and capacity of farmers in conserving and developing biodiversity of tuber plants in eco-label certification forest, Bengawan Solo watershed. Objective 1 : To encourage more effective function of Gabungan Kelompok Hutan Lestari (GKHL/Sustainable Forest Group Union) in forest conservation management Indicators : 1. GKHL and 8 KHL (Sustainable Forest Group) in village level hold regular monthly meeting 2. GKHL had evaluated the implementation of RKHL (Sustainable Forest Management Plan) 3. At least one female member is included in the organizational structure of GKHL and KHL. Activities : 1. Supporting the regular monthly meeting and individual activities of GKHL and KHL. This assistantship will be done by TPP (Program Implementer Team) from PERSEPSI and it will discuss the progress, challenges, and the future plans of the activities. 2. Conducting participatory monitoring and evaluation workshop for RKHL implementation. This activity is held as initial meeting to prepare the organizational structure of GKHL, KHL, and members before evaluating the RKHL implementation. The activity will guide the organization on how to evaluate, what are the aspects to be evaluated, when should it be conducted, and who will be involved in such evaluation. This evaluation will involve external stakeholders such as Forestry, Agriculture, and Cooperative Offices from local government in sub-district level to ensure their support and acknowledgement to make the program sustainable. 3. Implementing RKHL evaluation This evaluation is a self-evaluation done by the group to measure their level achievement on forest management. The evaluation will later discussed in the GKHL together with various stakeholders and resource person to provide input and suggestion. The evaluation will be conducted once every six months. 4. Conducting training on Organization, Management, and Administration with gender perspective. The training is aimed to increase knowledge and skills regarding organizational structure, management, and administration system. The materials for training will be derived based on the need assessment of such organization, including the gender perspective training. The training will be held in one day with 30 participants representing 8 villages. Objective 2 : To increase the variety of plants in the managed-forest by developing timber plantations and second layer tuber plants and medical plants. Indicators : 1. Existing at least 10 species of long-term plants (timber and fruits) in community-based forest, including teak, mahogany, sengon (Albazia falcataria), jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba), hibiscus, acacia, mindi (Melia Azedarach L), mango, avocado, mangosteen, gamelina, sono that developed in 1,404 ha area. 2. At least 4 species of tuber plants including porang (Amarphopallus oncophilus), suwek, arrowroot, and gembili (Dioscorea esculenta L) and combined with medical plants are developed in community-based forest of 8 hectares. 3. Training on tuber plants cultivation and business analysis with 60 participants are implemented. 4. Existing 1,000 copies of brochures regarding cultivation and management of post-harvest tuber plants and distributed to 8 villages. Activities : 1. Conducting workshop on biodiversity, including timber and tuber plants identification The workshop is aimed to increase knowledge and awareness of KHL members in regards with the importance of biodiversity in supporting environmental sustainability. It is also expected to map type of tuber plants and what are the possible developments to increase the biodiversity function in the area. The workshop will be done in one day and participated by 30 persons representing 8 villages. It is expected that they will distribute the knowledge to the rest of communities. 2. Conducting training on cultivation and feasibility studies of tuber plants business. The training is aimed to increase knowledge and awareness regarding tuber plants cultivation, conduct its feasibility studies on cultivating, and analyze the business opportunities on tuber development before establishing the business. The workshop will be done in one day and participated by 60 persons and done in two batches representing members of KHL in each village. It is expected that they will distribute the knowledge to the rest of communities. 3. Procuring seeds of timber and tuber plants. This activity is aimed to increase the varieties of such plants as one of the efforts to increase the biodiversity quality in the eco-labelled forest. The procurement will include 20,000 bars of timber plants and 4,000 kg of tuber plants. These will be distributed to each village participated in the program by involving the GKHL and/or KHL members during the allocation and disbursement process. 4. Establishing a demonstration plot of food reserve forest The demo plot will act as pilot for community-based management for food reserve forest for farmers in the working site. The demo plot will be designed participatory and combine the function of forest as tuber plant producers and food commodity. The size of the demo plot is one hectare each and it will be developed in 8 villages. The location will be selected by involving all elements from GKHL, KHL, and other members. 5.
