Problem Statement: Kyela district has abundant supply of water bodies. Water bodies in Kyela include: Rivers, Lakes, Natural and man-made dams and streams. The most notable environment threats in the district are the degradation and pollution of water sources, which is attributable to human activities. Results are pathetic. Some water bodies are drying up due to siltation and degradation of catchment areas; fish stocks are dwindling and fishing activities for livelihood is seriously affected. Under the proposed project, local communities will be sensitized to refrain from practices that degrade the environment. Demonstration projects on rehabilitation of degraded lands will be supported to contribute to reducing the trend of degradation. About the proponent: The NGO is Kyela based. It is one of the few NGOs that are based and operates in a rural area. Its operational coverage involves 13 wards and 50 villages. Its area of focus is soil and water conservation. Project Objective: To conserve water sources in 50 villages in Kyela district through dissemination of environment education and demonstration activities. Implementation strategy: Deepen understanding and conservation awareness of local communities through village level public meetings TOT Inter-community learning through exchange visits Strengthening of village environment committees Dissemination of posters, leaflets and brochures.
