Project Description
Same District is one of the six administrative districts that make up of Kilimanjaro Region in Tanzania. In this context Same District has 6 divisions, 25 wards and 78 villages. According to 2002 census the District has a population of 212,325 peope (103,520 males and 108,805 female) distributed over 44,474 households. The population growth raise it estimated at 1.6. Two thirds of same District is highland. 70% of the residents are farmers. Therefore farming is voered out on slopes which in many areas are quite steep. this topography is presenting the following problems. There is serious soil erosion, which has reduced soil fertility, crop yield per unit area is very long and there is plenty of run off during rainy season which causes erosion in the highlands and floods in the lowlands. It is within the context of these challenges that this proposed project was conceived. The project aims at addressing these challenges by promoting rainwater harvesting techniques in order to utilize rain surface run off before it is wasted, introducing intensive farming to increase crop productivity to small household plots and encouraging short maturing crop varieties. The project will be implemented in the four wards of Mwembe, Mhezi, Mshewa and Msindo all in Same District intending to reach 25,000 community memebrs by September 2009.
