Project Description
Project Description
The main objective of this proposed project is to mainstream alternative energy in the secondary school system in Trinidad and Tobago by implementing solar energy devices in seven (7) schools located in different communities across the country. Using the secondary school network and education system as the vehicle of change and engaging in sensitization programmes targeted mainly at the nation s youth will be an investment which augers well for the future energy security and sustainable development of our twin island Republic. By working with the schools, this project will reach out to several communities, strengthening capacity at various levels. Students and teachers will be encouraged to share their knowledge and experience with their families and their wider community. The project aims to directly reduce Green House Gas Emissions (GHGEs) as a consequence of the adoption and direct application of solar energy. The following renewable energy systems will be constructed and installed in the participating schools: - Grid-tied solar energy generation systems to serve as electrical power generation sources for the computers and lighting in the computer laboratories. - As a natural solution for water purification purposes in the science laboratories, solar still devices (as endorsed by the Caribbean Solar Energy Society) will be installed to satisfy the demand for distilled water. The project provides an opportunity for the use of cheaper, cleaner energy sources in secondary schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago. Not only does it afford them an avenue for reducing the risk being exposed to rising utility prices but it also assists in safeguarding the environment in an economical way. Promotion of clean air, green environments and minimal waste byproducts from petroleum electricity generation serve as an aid in the ecological sustainability process. It opens the doors for jobs in the renewable energy field for citizens who will eventually be supported by the design and development of training and degree programmes in solar energy management systems and energy security and conservation. Sensitization and mentorship programmes will be employed to inform students and teachers about solar energy generation and management systems being implemented in their work and school environments.
