Project Description
The Kara-Koyun plot is the favorable wintering and mating place of Central Asian tortoise (Agrionemys horsfieldi), steppe viper (Vipera ursini) and (Pseudopus apodus) included into Red Book of Kyrgyzstan. Tortoise concentration achieves to 3-5 individuals on 1m2 at the turn of the April and at the beginning of May. As a result of big anthropogenic load (annually deforestation, plough out of slope, cattle pasturing) this habitat was destroyed. The other threat for tortoise and snakes becomes their provision provoked by foreign procurer for the last 3-4 years. All these processes can bring to total disappearance of these species. The main purpose of the project is conservation and rehabilitation of habitat of Red Book reptiles through the organizing community based patrol, fencing and planting saplings of almonds and pistachios in 50 hectares land. During the project realization the follow results are expected to be achieved: Ecological It will be preserved the habitat of several species of reptiles included into Red Book of Kyrgyzstan, two from them are endemic of Central Asia and volume provision of reptiles will be reduced. Economic It is supposed products of pistachio and fast growing trees will give additional incomes or reduce expenses on timber. It is possible, established workshop on forest products processing (herbal, pistachio fruits) creates new work places. Socio-cultural or political It is supposed, the population will change their attitude to biodiversity conservation, use it by more sustainable way than earlier. Actions to be undertaken by Public Association Baygojo in the frame of the project: 1.Conducting seminars and round table. 2.Fencing the planting territory. 3.Planting saplings and seed of pistachios, almonds 4.Distribute planting lots among the local population. 5.Organize community based patrol. 6.Organizing workshop to processing forest fruits. 7.Pass a resolution to announce this territory as community reserve. 8.Make research to find out the causes of biodiversity loss threats. 9.Publishing brochures and posters. Two groups of population participates in the project, which are cooperated into PA Baiygojo and Aychurok jamaat, school children of Kyzyltuu, Rahmandjan, Karabulak villages, specialists of Nookent Forestry. The main project activities will take place on Kara-Koyun plot located in Masy Ayil Okmot, Nooken rayon, Jalalabat oblast, which is in 100 km to the south-east of board of Sarychelec reserve. The expected benefits of the project, including environmental and livelihood benefits Ecological -included into Red Book of Kyrgyzstan reptiles habitat protection and their volume provision reduction -rehabilitation of wood-bushes vegetations of steppe and forest-steppe zone of Fergana range The main economic benefits of the project are: -appearance of additional incomes connected with pistachio provision, -receiving fast growing trees and creating work places on forest products processing (pistachio fruits, herbal etc.).
