Water resources policy and administrative management

The global objective of the project is to ensure wide public participation in the activities for strengthening the river banks, anti-erosion measures, development of agri-forestry schemes and improved water quality of the rivers feeding into the Danube. Specific objectives of the project are establishing a model for strengthening the river banks, improving the ecology of the environment through increasing the forest cover on the territory of the two municipalities Oryahovo and Hayredin and achieving economic benefits for the municipalities and the private forest owners. This project aims to support the two municipal administrations, the regional and local government structures, local associations of private entrepreneurs and forest owners in regions, which have interest in producing and selling timber and timber products from fast growing species, as well as agricultural produce from agri-forestry. The project will be implemented in two stages for a period of one year. The first stage is for project preparation and includes site selection and agreement with the municipalities, study of the specific local conditions, model design and cost estimate of afforestation and the other project implementation activities. The second stage is for project implementation and includes a media campaign for presenting the goal and the activities of the project, implementation of forestry activities and afforestation in the selected demonstration sites on the territory of the two municipalities, training workshops for acquainting the municipal authorities and private forest owners with the results and benefits from the proposed agroforestry model and anti river bank erosion campaign along the Danube river. Throughout project implementation, it is expected that the municipal administrations of Oryahovo and Hayredin and all participating private forest owners will acquire the necessary knowledge and understanding of the ecological significance and economic benefits from implementing and developing the activities of the project.
