Project Description
The project is situated in Fombe ward 1 of Nyanga District in the extreme northern end of Nyanga District. The ward falls in agro-ecological region V, which is characterized by high temperatures throughout the year, with low and erratic annual rainfalls of less than 600mm. the underlying problem to sustainable management of biodiversity in fombe is gold panning, stream bank cultivation and unsustainable harvesting of resources. The project is facilitating the establishment of tree nurseries at Fombe, Chimusasa and Kodzaimambo Primary schools in the ward. The project is also encouraging propagation of Jatropha, Cassava, Moringa and other multipurpose trees and shrubs that have a nutritional values. project objectives 1. to stregthen the capacity of communities in Fombe to manage woodlands and rehabiolitate degraded areas 2. to stregthen the capacity of communities in fombe to grow and manage jatropha curcas l. 3. developing interventions that will enable households to use biofuels efficiently. activities involved 1. establishing multi purpose tree nurseries 2. establishing consolidated gardens 3. rehabilitating degraded lands using tree and cover crops 4. promoting chingwa stoves intended results outputs 1. woodlots established at fombe pry school and clinic 2. increased knowledge, awareness and preparedness to participate in afforestation 3. a community garden established where conservation agriculture is established 4.woodlots established on degraded land along ther rwenya and kaerezi rivers 5. protected habitats for wildlife species 6.pilot households have skills to use chingwa stoves and to train other community members. 7. JCl oil demonstated as a fuel in stoves and lamps. outcomes 1. stream bank cultivation decreases along the rwenya and kaerezi rivers 2. increased food production and improved household food security 3. deforestation and soil erosion are reduced. 4.decrease in volume of firewood used in cooking and domestic uses 5. the rate of cutting trees for firewod is reduced 6.jatropha oil is used for lighting and cooking 7. increase in women health impacts 1.improved management of the rwenya and kaerezi river systems. 2. comprehensive energy solution for household cooking and lighting in ward 2 of nyanga 3. deforestation is reduced and biodiversity increases
