- BACKGROUND The kabuba ward is part of the binga district which is one of the most isolated and least developed districts in Zimbabwe. the district is characterized by poor soils, low and erratic rainfall and chronic poverty that leaves 80-85% of the binga households facing food shortages. the water springs are also a major source of agricultural production and at the same time a source of water for both livestock and wildlife. the kabuba water springs and its springs are being destroyed through poor resource management and extraction activities resulting in land degradation through the formation of gullys. there is also loss of biodiversity that includes of illala palm, wetlands, vegetation and wildlife. PROJECT OBJECTIVES - To improve conservation and management of biodiversity and ecological processes in the kabuba ward springs and its environs. -to expand the range of livelihood opportunities for local communities through the promotion and diversification of livelihood resources. - to initiate the capacity building process to enable local communities to better manage the wetland springs natural resources and their livelihoods projects. - to produce a video proposal for kabuba ward for submission to the GEFSGP for funding. PROJECT ACTIVITIES - Carry out an environmental and socio economic baseline. -determine economic potential of some key livelihood activities and resources for sustainable operations using the local indigenous knowledge systems. -develop and produce the funding proposal document in line with the GEFSGP and the video proposal. RESULTS -funding proposal document developed - video proposal developed - baseline survey results document -awareness raising campaigns conducted.
