Project Description
The Shari Dog originated in the area of Shari Mountain massif between Albanian and Macedonia. The breed that was typically used as a sheep and herding dog is hard to be found nowadays. The breed was first registered by the F d ration Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1939 as the Illyrian Shepherd dog, after the ancient name of the region. In 1957 the General Assembly of the F.C.I. accepted a motion proposed by the Yugoslavian Federation of Cynology to change the name of the breed to "Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog arplanina", after the Shar Mountains where the breed is most common. Sheep herding and transhumance in the high mountain regions is a common practice in Albania. This project aims at the promotion of this breed among Albanian shepherds as well as among dog breeders.
