The overall goal for this project is to provide information, awareness education, and training to enhance acceptance and commitment of communities within the Lau lagoon on the importance of Mangroves to the community livelihood and the economy by 2011. There are a number of lagoons, including Lau Lagoon, in Solomon Islands which are significantly structuring the marine environment. Lau Lagoon mangroves and the coastal areas have been serving family food requirements for domestic and case based. However, decrease of mangroves due to unsustainable extraction for cooking and construction has been observed and it started to affect the marine ecosystem. Additionally, collection of mangroves for domestic use is becoming harder for locals (especially children and women) - they have to travel further to collect. This project aims to rehabilitate mangroves in Lau Lagoon to secure NRs and to promote sustainable use of them. Expected Outputs; - Increased community s awareness toward protection of mangroves, sustainable and wise use of NRs - Better condition of mangrove forests in Lau Lao Lagoon
