Plastic bottles and plastic shopping bags make up about 30% of the volume of solid household waste. While organic and some other degradable waste is not very dangerous for the environment, huge amount of plastic waste is an everlasting source of contamination. The project will contribute to reduction of plastic waste in Kapan community by improving municipal service of waste management and enhancement of public awareness and education. Specific goals of the project include: 1. Contribution to reduction of dioxin and furan emissions as a result of open burning and self-ignition in the community landfill, by promoting separation and recycling of plastic bottles (PET) from solid household waste. 2. Contribution to environmental and sanitation improvement by reduction of usage of plastic bags (PVC) through offering an alternative to them. By the end of the project the following results will be accomplished: 1. The local government authorities have obtained technical capacities to manage sorting, collecting and selling of separated PET waste; 2. The community has an alternative to plastic shopping bags (PVC); 3. The community level stakeholders (decision makers, NGOs, teachers, residents, volunteers) are aware of global environmental challenges addressed by the GEF, in particular adverse effects of PET bottles and plastic (PVC) bags on the environment, as well as are informed about important provisions of Stockholm Convention on POPs; 4. Around 30 women have received opportunity of a temporary job and have enhanced their role as behavior changers.
