The goal of the project is to raise awareness about biodiversity through the coordination and promotion of the Green Wave in Belize, ultimately contributing to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) programme of work on Communication, Education and Public Awareness. Objective 1: To coordinate the Green Wave campaign at four primary schools in the buffer communities surrounding the BAS co-managed protected areas including Belize City. Result: The adoption and carrying out of the Green Wave on May 22, 2010. Objective 2: To create awareness and understanding of the importance of biodiversity; educating children and youth on the importance of biodiversity to curb future loss of biodiversity. Result: A better understanding of biodiversity and the impact they as individuals can make on the biodiversity of Belize, both in a positive and negative manner. Description of Project Activities: Activity 1.1: Coordinate the visit of the four primary schools in the villages of Biscayne, Lemonal, Crooked Tree and Belize City to participate in the Green Wave on May 22nd , 2010. Activity 1.2: Coordinate an exhibition on biodiversity competition amongst the general Belizean citizenry. Activity 2.1: Preparation and production of educational material: re-publication of coloring/story book Amazing Tree and informational CD on the biodiversity its importance and threats. Activity 2.2: Outreach to schools to present the Reading Day about Biodiversity to create awareness and understanding of the importance of biodiversity; educating on the importance of biodiversity to curb future loss of biodiversity. Activity 2.3: Preparation and development of educational material: background, costumes, skit, games, etc. for IDB Event, May 22nd Activity 2.4: Coordinate May 22nd International Biodiversity Day Event Risks to Successful Implementation: Due to the limited time frame to coordinate a national campaign of this nature, financial resources will need to be adequate and readily accessible to complete the necessary indicators within the timeframe. Through efficient management, the potential risks will be minimized. Due to BAS s experience in these areas, lessons learned from previous work will be applied to increase successful implementation.
