The project, Energy recovery and utilization from piggery waste using biogas technology was approved and funded by the GEF/SGP to the tune of US $ 31,125.00 (BWP 234,734.80 equivalence), and initial funds were disbursed on the 31st May, 2012. This project has this far done a baseline study in areas within the South East Agricultural region and determined locations of high concentration of intensive animal agricultural operations, with a specific focus on piggery. Piggery wastargeted because pig farmers in the South East Agricultural region hadreported a waste management problem to the Piggery section of the Ministry of Agriculture. This problem is compounded by the fact that a study by Botswana s Local Enterprise Agency (LEA) has identified piggery as a possible venture for diversification of Botswana s agricultural sector (Sunday Standard, July, 25 31, 2010, Appendix 2). This study has ignited a process of investment of a vast majority of Batswana in piggery.
