Another project, at the federal level, intends to promote irrigated fruit cultures along the rivers margins, which has met strong resistance by local communities. The region is also the stage for land tenure conflicts between agribusiness and small farmers fighting for expropriation of unproductive land to constitute Agrarian Reform Settlements.
