OVERALL OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate provision of sustainable safe water supply and sanitation model to help contribute to the reduction of mortality and morbidity among women and children in Districts of Nawabshah and Khairpur Mirs Activities to be carried out under project: PLANNED JOINT ACTIVITIES OF UNDP/(SGP), PCRWR AND UNICEF SAFWCO in collaboration with PCRWR at the federal level, and Local Government Departments at the provincial level, will implement activities in two districts, Nawabshah and Khairpur Mirs. The theme of this agreement is based on water quality and the provision of alternative safe water supply options; improvement of water quality and the promotion of appropriate technologies to help provide safe water supply options for affected target communities of Sindh. Installing chlorination/treatment plants and Arsenic/POPs Removal Technologies (ART) at Tehsil/Taluka HQs and schools, respectively, will help promote such themes and raise awareness among effected communities, politicians and administrators. Awareness in schools and among students is also important as students are seen as effective change agents in their communities around the country. The co-operation between UNICEF, UNDP/Small Grant Programme (SGP), PCRWR and LG will include activities such as the promotion of improved sanitation facilities and capacity development of the government and community to participate in and lead the local management of services provided. SGP resources will be used by SAWFCO to create awareness about the sustainable/rational use of chemicals and arsenic and the introduction of chlorination/treatment technologies. DETAILS OF ACTIVITIES PLANNED SAWFCO activities using SGP funding: Install safe water supply options, such as hand pump-dug wells or surface water treatment, and install ARTs and POPs removal technologies for 80 schools and districts and HQs. Orientation and Planning meeting with partners at Tehsil Level; UNDP/UNICEF Representative, Representative from Local Government, PCRWR, MOST, District Nazim, DCO, EDO-Education, Health, CD, Tehsil Nazim, TMO, ADO-Education, Health, UC-Nazims, Chairpersons-SMCs, Headmistresses. To explain objectives of the program, activities, roles and responsibilities, suggestions, expected result, time line, and distribution of material. Training in: Water and hygiene education, water source development, toilet facilities Sample collection Water testing, distribution of sampling kits Water treatment Operation and maintenance of treatment plant Monitoring and Reporting of the activities Monthly; Support governments to establish sustainable systems for monitoring water quality; Development of reporting formats Bench mark data and incidence of water born diseases BHUs Number of water source development Number of treatment plants installed Operation and maintenance-Number of SMCs with contribution collected Bi-monthly meetings with Tehsil Government Follow up Workshops at Cluster level (10 workshops) in each district; Check the retention of knowledge: Status of water testing and alternative source development, Operation and maintenance arrangements Media campaign for awareness End of the Project Evaluation Participatory evaluation with the participation of major partners UNICEF parallel activities: Installing safe water supply sources to benefit 400 schools in Punjab and 200 schools in Sindh. Install 4 chlorination/treatment plants for water supply in Sindh Province. Provide training manuals/BCC materials Provide water quality testing kits for bacteria, arsenic and POPs pollution Support the Government to establish sustainable systems for monitoring water quality Project Stakeholders and Beneficiaries: 50% of Household in 6 MCHC/PE districts targeted well informed and practice improved hygiene practices 80% of girls in primary schools in 6 districts have access to and utilize sanitation and improved sources of water supply Project Strategy SAWFCO will work together with UNICEF, the federal Government, PCRWR of the Ministry of Science & Technology (MOST) and local Government Departments on water, environment, and sanitation programmes as well as community mobilization. This will aim at reducing water contamination through the rational use of chemicals and reduced POP contamination and mitigation to remove arsenic from the water supply in 80 schools of Nawabshah and Khairpur Mirs Districts.
