Project Description
This project is aiming at conservation of 365 ha of sea grass resources inside the UNEP-SCS demonstration sites in Kompot province, Cambodia for increasing fish stock which will help to improve the fish habitat and increase biodiversity in Community Fisheries areas. The project also provides education to communities to appreciate and protect environmental resources which could lead to a decrease or end of illegal fishing. In addition to that the project will empower women in participation and leadership in group management through organizing them 3 saving groups (10-15 women each) to participate in protection and conservation of natural resources and actively take part in other community development activities. Objectives: Protection and management of sea grass to ensure the sustainability development of fisheries resources for community livelihood improvement through: i) Building and strengthening capacity of Community committee members on leadership and management skills ii) Related laws enforcement increase public awareness on sea grass management and sustainable use iii) Protection and expanding sea grass protected areas iv) Provide other livelihood options for community members to reduce pressure on coastal resources through saving group v) Increase community knowledge on fish culture and crap bank Project Outputs: - Community Members get more understanding on project activities and participated in all project activities. - Community Committee members have leadership and management skills - 150 fishermen have better understanding on costal resources management laws and regulations - 70% of fishers who using illegal fishing gear were stop using it - Sea grass protected areas map was produced - Around 350 ha of existing sea grass protection and 15 ha of sea grass conservation were protected - 200 concrete pools (20 cm x 20 cm x 6 m ) were built and put inside sea grass protected areas with 6 signed boards - 15 members of women have capacity in running and managing their Saving Group. - 9 community members were selected to manage 3 crap bank cages. - 30 farms have received training on fish culture. Project Activity: - Conduct meeting and lunch project implementation. - Conduct quarterly meeting and to present the project progress - Conduct Study tour for community committee members on costal resources management and sea grass protection - Provide training on administrative and financial management - Dissemination meeting on Fisheries Laws and related regulation on natural resources management - Prepare and produced promotion material such as poster, brochure and T-shirt. - Regular patrolling Community Protected Areas - Monitoring and Evolution sea grass and habitat. - Demarcation and mapping protected Areas - Procuring concrete pools and put it inside protected areas. - Organize women saving group - Provide training on Book keeping and micro-credit management - Dissemination meeting with villagers, Community Committee members about Crap Bank activity and select it s committee members - Conduct study tour to learnt about Crap bank with Kept Thmey Community - Prepare inside rules and regulations to manage Crap bank cages - Construction of crap bank cages - Provide training on fish culture
