Changyuan County is located in southwest Linchang Prefecture, Yunnan, and it is a key national county for poverty alleviation and development and combined together with the old, minority, the border, mountains and the poor, and is one of the only 2 Wa autonomous counties in China.It is the key national extremely-poor-county and key financially aided target-county.Dalong village in Chanyuan County has 62 households with 170 population and annual income of $327 per capita. Bamboo combines remarkable advantages of ecological conservation and economic benefit.52 bamboo species under 18 genus distribute in Changyuan County where is one of the most concentrated distribution and abundant area for national bamboo species, and where is also the origin and the centre of the rare and endanger bamboo specie Dendrocalamus sinicus, and honoured as the Chinese hometown of Dendrocalamus sinicu. The project will support the local community to develop bamboo economy and conserve bamboo species diversity. Main problems: 1) Large scale man-made bamboo forest caused declining of biodiversity, degradation of bamboo age structure, underproduction of bamboo forest and reduction of soil fertility. 2) The local community over exploited and lacks of sustainable management capacity for bamboo forest 3) The conservation of rare and endangered local species Dendrocalamus sinicus Chia et J.L.Sun is facing difficulties. 4)The local community`s income is very low and the abundant local bamboo resources need to be converted as economic benefits. Solutions/activities: 1)Establish 10 ha. of bamboo forest demonstration plot to fulfil comprehensive benefits of timber, shoots and landscape biodiversity conservation and sustainable management. 2)Organize trainings on bamboo tending, sustainable management, biodiversity conservation and bamboo sustainable use. 3)Promote project model in entire township and county. 4)Submit policy recommendation to governmental agency on bamboo sustainable use. Anticipated results/outcomes: 1) The bamboo forest will increase 8 species 2) The locals income will increase $36885 per year. 3) 62 households will directly benefit from this project. 4) 100 people will be informed with project model.
