Main problems: 680,000 energy-saving lamps have been used in Yinchuan, Ningxia since 2008 and after three-years, these lamps are going towards their end of life cycle. One energy-saving lamp contains 5mg. mercury. If the mercury releases, it will pollute water resources and air. There is no treatment on mercury-contained waste including used energy-saving lights now. Project activities/solutions: 1.training for staff and volunteers 2.prephase evaluation 3.public outreach on used energy-saving lights collection 4.install mercury-contained waste recycle bins and collect these waste for industry treatment 5.project results promotion 6.project evaluation Anticipated results/outcomes: 1 about 50000 community residents have the knowledge of dealing with used energy-saving lamps and other mercury-contained waste, their enivironment awarness is enhanced; 2 about 100000 used energy-saving lamps are collected and sent to factory for safe treatment which will reduce 500g mercury release and prevent 18million tons of water pollution.
