Project Description
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are chemical substances that persist in the environment, bioacculumate through the food web, and pose a risk of causing adverse effects to the human health and the environment. The project is aimed to address mainly the unintentional sources of POPs from waste burning at health care setting as well as in open burning. In addition to this, the industrial chemicals like polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) contaminated transformer oil is being used in massively used in the grill workshops in the welding machine and thus once again produced furan the know POPs is aimed to address through this proposed project. The first part deals under this proposed proposal is to research and advocate for minimize the production or release of unintentional POPs such as dioxin and furan, especially from the solid waste and medical waste, and also burning in various sub standards so called incinerators in most of the government and private health care institutions. These will help in implementation of NIP`s second prioritized activities. The second part of the proposed project is to carry out the assessment of the use of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) contaminated transformer oils in over 1000 welding workshop in Kathmandu Valley thus producing Furan and hence the people including children`s working in the workshop as well as nearby communities are exposed to these noxious gases. These will also help in implementation of NIP`s second prioritized activities. In addition to this, the overall information and dissemination of the National Implementation plan along with very brief information on the 12 old POPs (Aldrin, Chlordane, Dieldrin, Endrin, Heptachlo,Mirex, Toxaphene, DDT, Hexachlorobenzene, PCBs, Chlorinated dioxins, Chlorinated fuans) as well as 9 new POPs (octa BDE, penta BDE, PFOS, alpha -HCH, - HCH, chlordecone, HBB, lindane and PeCB) will be shared among the wider sector of stakeholders while carrying out TOT and Regional Training as well as disseminating the massage through mass media.
