1. About NGO Luapula Families In Distress -LUFAID is a community based non-Governmental organization founded in the year 2001 by five volunteers (two USA Peace Corps, one Japanese and two Zambians). The social economic impact of the known HIV and AIDS still has to be measured in Luapula Province. It is due to the search for knowledge and practical approaches to solving this HIV and AIDS that LUFAID was founded to respond to the challenges and negative impact that disease had brought on humanity. The organization began by emphasizing the need to promote the principle of participation, decentralization and use of integrated approaches in the fight against the HIV and AIDS pandemic through the involvement of the people in local communities. LUFAID is governed by the Board which assumes the policymaking functions of the organization and comprises of the Chairperson, Vice chairperson, Executive secretary, Vice secretary, Treasurer and five committee members. The function secretariat is headed by the Executive Director appointed by the Board. The Executive Director exercising the power vested in him/her with the help of the board employs other members of management team. This includes the Programs Director, Accountant(s), Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Program Officer(s), Field/Outreach Officer(s) LUFAID has been operating legally since 2002 when it got registered by registrar of societies in Zambia, registration certificate Number ORS/102/46/236. LUFAID strength and capacity in the proposed project lie in the much experience and knowledge acquired in working and involving of various BCC strategies. In addition to that, the organization technical capacity has been tremendously been built over the years as a result of attending various trainings organized by Pact-Zambia, ZNAN, CHIN, and LPCB-Zambia LUFAID is in the better position and is a well-placed organization to do this kind of project because of the rich past experience. They have trained and experienced facilitators in Environment and Climate Change and Forestry as well as in Natural Resource Management, project and financial managements. They also have quite a big team of volunteers from whom we are able to select and work with depending on the location of the project 2. Project s main objective 2.1 To contribute to enhanced community based natural resource management through environmental rehabilitation and land degradation for sustainable livelihoods and reduced vulnerability for rural communities of Mansa and Chembe districts. 3. Specific objectives: 3.1 To train 4 women groups and 4 youth groups in natural resource management through conservation farming, rain fed agro-forestry, and crop production in two districts of Luapula Province, by December, 2014 3.2 To promote environmentally friendly practices among 4 women and 4 youth groups in conservation farming, rain fed agro-forestry, and crop production in two districts of Luapula Province, by December, 2014. 3.3 To strengthen capacity of LUFAID staff to enable it meets expectations of the project by December, 2014. 4. Key project outcomes 4.1 Positive attitudes towards environmental issues among the targeted women and youth groups 4.2 Increased use of fuel or energy efficient stoves among the targeted women and youth groups 4.3 Increased land area under cover because of tree planting promotion and natural regeneration of vegetation. 4.4 Improved livelihood and quality of life among the targeted women and youth groups. 4.5 Local community (women and youth groups) are aware of environmental issues 4.6 Community households live in rehabilitated and protected environment (forests, ground and surface water, land and soil, etc) 4.7 Local communities adopt sustainable natural resource management practices
