Project Description
FOSUP is an NGO registered under Section 7 (1) of Societies Act CAP 119 of the laws of Zambia on 4th January 2003. FOSUP currently works in all provinces of Zambia. FOSUP s key focus areas have included institutional capacity strengthening, agricultural technical training and evidence-based advocacy. FOSUP s mission is to support small-scale farmer organizations in Zambia to enable them meet their members needs and ensure sustainable production and service delivery, through networking, training, campaigning, advocacy and lobbying . In the past six years, FOSUP has been involved in environmental management projects and activities. Notable among them include: 1) Moringa and Jatropha Project (in partnership MS Zambia now Action Aid, 2004-2005), raising environmental awareness, encouraging action and advocating better environment and livelihoods of 331 small scale farm families in Chongwe district 2) Rights to seed Project (in partnership with Harvest Help (now Self Help Africa Development Fund, 2007-2009), increasing access and uptake of good quality seed by 10,000 poor rural farmers in Chibombo, Kaoma and Mpika enabling them realize their right to food security. 3) Integrated Conservation and Forestry Project (in partnership Oxfam GB 2008-2009), demonstrating the use of indigenous tree seeds (Mungongo, Jatropha) for soap making, lighting and cooking among Mongu communities. 4) Environmental Project (supported by Oxfam GB -2009 -2010), promoting commercialization of Mungongo and other forest products in Sesheke district through institutional capacity building. 5) Local Capacity for Local Livelihoods Project (supported by Development Fund (Norway) through Self Help Africa, 2009), building the capacity of local CSOs in Solwezi and Nyimba in responding to the environmental challenges. 6) Building livelihood assets of rural households Project (supported by Concern Worldwide 2008-2009), building the capacity of Mongu District farmer Association to respond effectively to the environmental needs of its members. 2. Project s main objective 2.1 To improve livelihoods of 200 Mungongo (Ricinodenron Rautanenii) nut collectors by increasing and diversifying their incomes 3. Specific Objectives 3.1 To commercialize Mungongo products as a measure against overexploitation of the forest 3.2 To reduce pressure on the natural woodlot through promotion of alternative sources of livelihood 3.3 To build the capacity of local institutions in protection (conservation), restoration and sustainability of major natural forest resources such as Mungongo trees and wetlands in the Zambezi basin
