Hajft village located at the extreme end of Drakbou region close to land end before dropping towards the western sea of Socotra. The open flat plain below the village of Hajft is subjected to progressive soil erosion due to rain flood that lead to losing its soil and vegetation since long time. The project aimed at achieving the followings: - Stop land erosion due to flood in Hajaft - Demonstrate the effectiveness of land erosion control measures - Improve land resources in the area - Raise environmental awareness among community The objective are going to be achieved through building water run-off dyke that deposit soil in the location. The project offers the first demonstration of such procedure to stop water erosion of land. The dyke is built with erosion resistance material (Gabions). Project will build local community capacity in building water erosion dykes on Socotra. It s anticipated that the lost soil over the past will be replaced and progressively built up to compensate the degraded area with soil hence vegetation cover will be naturally regenerated. Water retention will be improved hence grass and shrubs will be grown densely in the area.
