Project Description
The area of Katen-Dhahwow is located to the north-east of Hawf protected area. With its elevation of nearly 1400m above sea level, bordering the desert zone made it prone to low and sporadic rain fall. Most of Hawf Protected area receives heavy mist during the monsoon allows local community to collect it using plastic cover (mist net) to their huts. The mist in not possible to collect at higher altitudes, hence water harvest is the only way for collecting rain water and survival of human and animals in the area. Local community proposed to build a water harvest open cistern Karif with approximate capacity of 3314 cubic meters. Community in Katen-Dhawow are aware of the impact water availability in the area in increasing grazing pressure. The community will plant 500 browsing trees (250 before rain and 250 after rain) in order to increase planted trees survival. The community will mark an area of 500 sq. meters as grazing set-aside (Mahjour or Hima) system. Hima system (set-aside) was common in the area in the past, which has been abundant. This project will help community reviving range land management practices with hope to expand upon tangible responses to him system. The project will help community raising the awareness of climate change, Adaptation effort and revival of ancient grazing management system in Hawf area.
