Environmental policy and administrative management

Desertification is one of the most pressing environmental issues in Mongolia. Desertification is being intensified over most of Mongolia by many factors like sand shifts, negative effects of climate change and pastureland degradation. Desertification intensified by soil erosion, land degradation and climate change effects is a problem everywhere in Mongolia, even in forest steppe areas. This grant is given to a local community group to take some protection measures to rehabilitate a local ecosystem, combat soil erosion and to control sand shifts. For the first year, some 2 ha area of degraded land near Tseel village centre has been prepared for cultivating fruit plants in order to make an alternative income source to the community. A well that was out of use was repaired and is to be used for watering fruit plants from next spring of 2006.
