A small grant was given to an NGO in 2003 to help a local community establish a combined fruit and tree nursery nearby Batsumber village of Tuv aimag to produce 50,000 seedlings at the end of the first year of project implementation in order to support community forestry activities and livelihoods those who were involved in the project. To establish the nursery, some four hectare area in the right bank of a small river was fenced with following activities of processing and developing land to establish the nursery and cultivate over 1000 fruit seedlings for making a mother garden, where it will support the raising of fruit seedlings in the future. Pair of hand-dig wells was made available in the crop field on their own in addition to the surrounding small river water source. The target for the first year was achieved and at the end of second year the project outcomes were enormous. Over 180,000 seedlings of 11different types of trees were raised and some 40 % of them was already sold out to other people and companies by the fall of 2005. The project was visited by the Resident Representative of UNDP in Mongolia in August 2005. In parallel with the above enormous and future contributions to local forests and global environment, the fruit and other trees nursery has been supporting the livelihoods of local community members. Approximate estimates of livelihood benefits state that as a minimum US $ 6,500 was earned by the community from selling 40 % of the raised seedlings.
