Bio-diversity

The Species Birgus latro (giant Coconut crab) is an IUCN listed endangered species that is subject to over exploitation in Vanuatu. Some viable stocks identified in Sanma province are also vulnerable to over harvesting with the increasing demand for the local peoples food and cash income through the sale of the resources to the restaurants. This project will determine the current status of the species and provide ecological and biological information to local communities and protected areas managers and buyers, train local monitors in good presentation of reports on any breaches of the laws that ban the harvesting of the resources, assist restocking in favorable sites for survival of the species and where management are feasible.
