Overall objectives of the project: 1. To enhance public and local awareness on community composting and recycling activities for sustainable living. 2. To divert resources away from landfills and incineration by producing useful products and to optimize its reusability. 3. To raise awareness on the importance to treasure the biodiversity of local indigenous fruit trees and increase availability of such rare trees in an urban setting. 4. To provide community training, and personnel development and involvement opportunities to the young, the unemployed and marginalized groups in the local community. 5. To enable the development of a participatory mechanism where the local community will actively sustain community composting, center recycling and indigenous trees conservation. ACTIVITIES: 1. Brochures, training workshops, presentations, printed materials - Presentations and workshops will be conducted to community and other stakeholders at Bandar Sri Damansara by ENSEARCH project team and resource persons using printed material, visual presentation and demonstrations to transfer awareness, knowledge, and skills. 2. Assist in setting up/equipping a local community center for composting and conservation activities at Bandar Sri Damansara. - This centre would be used for conduct of community composting operations at neighbourhood sites. - as a site where composting equipment and conservation materials (e.g. plant seedlings) can be stored, for intended distributed to participating residents. - for conduct of in-situ training on composting, and nursing and maintenance of fruit seedlings. - as a collecting centre where locals can sort and drop off recycling materials. - as a site where compost produced can be sold to buyers at marginal cost for gardening and landscaping purposes for additional income. - for residents who have participated in the conservation program to sell their produce to buyers. 3. Conduct awareness and knowledge transfer programs at schools, kindergartens, various societies and organizations around Bandar Sri Damansara. - ENSEARCH would conduct a series of train the trainers workshops to the community. Subsequent training workshops/ presentations would be conducted by the community trainers to sustain the capacity building process.
