The project aims to involve local communities on the islands of Johore in the development of sustainable livelihood through the conservation of giant clams. Capacity building activities like training and workshops will be held with local participation from various islands and marine park wardens. The local communities will be trained as eco rangers to monitor the conservation and pollution issues and as well as the sustainable use of the natural resources in the islands. These capacity building activities will have added value when carried out in Johor islands, which have been gazetted as marine parks in 1984. Innovative conservation programmes like the adopt the clam concept will be introduced to the local island communities which could facilitate their adoption of sustainable livelihoods such as ecotourism and sustainable clam harvesting. The local community will be able to act as coordinator to meetings for project evaluation etc. Pamphlets on coral reef and the giant clam conservation will be produced and disseminated to create awareness of conservation and environment among the local communities of the Johor Islands and also the general public. Monitoring and evaluation programmes will be carried out to determine the success of the projects in terms of sustainable resources.
