Nkhatabay district is one of the districts that lie on the shore of lake Malawi. The district depends on crop production and fish as their source of income and protein. However, fish is dwindling as a result there is need for alternative source of occupation and protein. The targeted area has vast wetlands for irrigation and as well as pasture development. In the low lands some of which lie close to the lake ,rivers and reservoirs could be irrigated, thus supplying an alternative income and providing maximum food security and social economic development. However the vast lands are still underdeveloped for more tangible social and economic development and food security. The targeted communities are far from job opportunities, not economically empowered and food insecure. Therefore the community engage in cutting down of trees for fish dryng racks and fish cultivation. Objectives: Improved livelihoods security at household level that leads to adequate access to and control of their livelihoods strategies without exploiting their natural resource base. -To promote livestock and crop diversification -To promote sustainable use of natural resources -To increase appropriate use of crop-livestock technologies and reduce use of mechanical fertilizers. -Increase economic base at household level through dairy production, cattle, goat pass-on programe. Expected Results: -Food security and increased income base at household level -Increased protected village forests -Increase in number of beneficiaries from pass-on programme -Increase in number of beneficiaries adopting technologies that mitigate effects of climate change
