Originated in the Phetchaboon Range and constituting the ecosystem of the Mekhong River, the Phrom River had long in the past been providing water and food for communities residing along its course of approximate 200 km.At present, the ecosystem of the river has been degraded due to inappropriate use of land and management of water resources. Consequently, the amount of flow becomes minimal, erosion more critical and conflict in water use more complex.These problems need to be urgently addressed by conditions and needs of all communities and with support from government agencies, private sectors and other agencies in the project area. Phrom River Conservation and Development Project is a local NGO working to build capacity of communities and promote alternative environmentally-friendly occupation.Since its inception in 1992,the project has launched the study into the problems of the river and continued to cooperate with other stakeholder in the management of the water resources. Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects): 1.To reclaim the ecosystem of the Phrom River : the area continue to be a catchment 2.To build capacity of communities on natural resources management 3.To demonstrate and develop appropriate system of integrate farming for conservation of the ecosystem Activities to be carried out under project: 1.Conducting study tour, convening seminar , workshops and training 2.Launching demonstration plots for integrated farming 3.Demarcating no-fishing zones, releasing fishes, and replanting of vegetation 4.Launching religious rites to revive conservation awareness. Project participants and/or beneficiaries: 1.Every Tambol Administrative Organization in the target area 2.The Petchaboon Alternative Agriculture Network 3.The Northeastern Sustainable Natural Resources Management Project 4.Phu King Conservation Group Anticipated results of project / Indicators: 1.There are 1,000 more trees along the banks. 2.There are 500,000 more fishes in the river 3.There emerge 9 no-fishing zones 4.There emerge 30 farmers which would be good models for other communities
