Project Description
This project responds to an assessment carried out by the Sea Turtle Watch (STW) in the Bassa Town, Little Bassa and Edina areas in 2011. The goal of this project is to increase the capacity of coastal communities to protect sea turtles and develop sustainable livelihoods programs in the target area. The project will focus on protecting sea turtles and their habitats, protecting nests from predation, and spreading awareness messages among the coastal villages and visitors. The main project area is a 38-km long beach which stretches from the mouth of the Farmington River [Bassa Point] to Little Bassa and Edina. The area lies between latitude 6.113246, longitude -10.368347, 6.02879, -10.215569, and latitude 5.91681, longitude -10.078583. The region is a home to a number of ecologically important and vulnerable coastal habitats including coral reefs, mangrove forests and sea grass beds which support high marine biodiversity. The project will target the remaining 18-km beach from Little Bassa to Bassa Point.
