Project Description
Project Description
It is in effort to adapt to and mitigate progression of these effects of climate change, the Gakindu Dairy Co-operative society has developed this project proposal. Specifically, the project aims at; reducing carbon emissions emanating from wood fuel and charcoal by at least 1,000 tonnes annually, through supporting installation of 100 units of twelve cubic meters {12M3}fixed dome biogas plants; increasing carbon sequestration through agro forestry in at least 100 farms by September, 2013 as well as raising the level of awareness among the community members for a clear understanding and effectively participate in the global issue of climate change, though sensitization seminars and enhance protection of Mt. Kenya ecosystem. The rationale behind the project is to encourage community members who directly contribute to climate change, to adapt sustainable technologies that are essential in reducing practices that bring about climate change. The project takes advantage of an already well established dairy farming in the region, with many farmers having zero grazing units in their farms and at least two dairy cows. The society has requested partnership with KENFAP, under their Kenya National Domestic Biogas Programme (KENDBIP), to provide subsidies towards construction of biogas. The proposed project is relevant to GEF / SGP Country programme strategy, since it will contribute to mitigation of climate change at house hold level, and more specifically, contribute to realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), adopted by the global community at the start of the 21st Century, as well as ensure that local communities are responsive to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) The proposed project is anticipated to run for 24 months, at a total cost of Kshs.9, 500,000 (US$ 118,750) where community will contribute KShs. 2,500,000 (US$ 31,250) in form of raw materials (e.g. seedlings), labour and in cash. The society has already negotiated with Taifa SACCO Ltd, for part financing in form of a loans to the members. KENDIP will award a contribution of Kshs. 25,000 per unit amounting to Kshs. 2,500,000 (US$ 31,250) A total amount of KShs. 4,000,000 (US $ 50,000) being requested from GEF/SGP will directly go in to 45% financing of the biogas installation, as well as in project administration.
