Project Description
The project rehabilitated the Amman oldest disposal site in Marka establishing a local community development center in a poor, polluted suburb of Amman, providing an example of what can be done in similar situations. In the first stage, 50,000 m2 out of the total surface area of 173,000 m2 were rehabilitated. The land was leveled; the soil tested and topographical maps prepared. Retaining walls were constructed, the site fenced, top-soil brought to the site and 6000 forest trees of varieties that tolerate the conditions in the area planted, in addition to 500 olive trees to be used for soap production later. All this was achieved through combined efforts of the NGO members, members of the local community, schools children, local authority and government institutions facilitated initially by seed money from the Global Environment Facility/ Small Grants Programme in Jordan.
