Project Description
Birecik steppes are one of the rarest and most important areas where monitor lizard and striped hyena live. The experts, who carried out studies in Yeni Akp nar and hbekir villages of Birecik district in 2007 and 2008, proved that striped hyena and monitor lizard live there. Thanks to the visual recordings, information on their habitat has been gathered. These studies have evidential value. The local people have long known striped hyena and monitor lizard and they used to hunt them. In the framework of the Small Grants Program, or SGP, awareness-raising studies have been carried out in pilot areas. In the framework of the Small Grants Program, the local people and the local authorities supported the conservation studies on striped hyena and monitor lizard. There have been changes in local people s approaches to these species. It has been observed that these people started to conserve them. The fact that the local women started to manufacture the cloth toys of these species and attracting the attention of the local development agencies can be considered great achievements. On site conservation which is an integral part of the conservation studies, has been carried out in the framework of Villagers Conserve project and the local people living in the district started to conserve monitor lizard and striped hyena. However there is not a legal sanction against hunting these species in the eye law. So a holistic conservation for these species is not possible. In Turkey, the hunting season which lasts 6 months (from February to July) coincides with the breeding seasons of striped hyena and monitor lizard and this poses a great threat. Although the local conservationists conserve these species, the habitats of the species are legally open and available for hunting. Local people s conservationist approach contrasts with the hunters. This situation causes problems between them and also poses a danger for the species. Only when the habitat and especially the nests of striped hyenas and monitor lizards gain protected statuses, they will reach healthy populations and lead healthy lives. Also the habitat of these rare species is under great threat, as the region undergoes a fast and haphazard urbanization process and housing activities reduce the habitat of the species. For this reason, the local authorities such as Birecik district governorship, Birecik municipality and the officials of the areas where the species live, are aware of the importance of the area and they want the area to gain protected status. A field visit will be organized for the Project to accomplish its goals. So the officials from Forestry and Waterworks Ministry will be able to see the species on their habitat, they will directly meet the local authorities and they will be able to witness the motivation of the local authorities. With the support of the local people and the power of the ministry, both species will lead sustainable lives.
