Project Description
Project Description
Context: Poor hygiene and water borne diseases are the main cause of poor class performance, ill-health and morbidity for school children in Kwimba District. District statistics show that for school children, one in six has water borne diseases. Acute shortage of water is the principle cause of illness. District statistics further shows that water per capita ranges from 2 to 8 litres (per person per day), which compares poorly with the national average of 20 litres per person per day. On the other hand, schools with adequate supply of water have very positive performance; they have good achievement in class; truancy is minimum and appear to be in sound health and mind. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate on how rainwater-harvesting technology could be used to harvest, store and use to improve water supply, sanitation and hygiene in schools. Project objective: To demonstrate on how rainwater harvesting technology could be used to improve water supply and sanitation in schools, which are located in areas where conventional water supply systems are not technically feasible.
