Decrease in farming activities, depleted soil fertility and declining crop yields are closely linked to the cause of rural poverty in Ajide community of about 15,000 agrarian people. Beside bush burning activities in search of grass cutters which is the major target animal in hunting within the community, the community is also faced with acute water shortage as a result of its geographical location and the adverse effects of climate change. There is therefore need for intervention through community-based solutions. This project is therefore tailored in line with GEF SGP goals to support community initiatives towards environmental protection and sustainable livelihood activities. For this purpose, project activities shall include: Production of 600 bags of 15kg compost manure), and, regulation of the use of chemical fertilizers by sensitization on the dangers of chemical fertilizers and provision of environmentally friendly compose manure, training and retraining of women and youths on organic fertilizers, construction of 1 solar powered bore hole: planting of 1000 citrus, mango and oil pam trees each on 3 hectares of community land which has already been donated; Establishment and enforcement of community bye laws for the protection of community forest ,construction and management of 3 grass cutter farms over 1 hectare of land to dissuade bush burning activities and serve as alternative livelihood activities
