Project Description
Development of the National Ecological Network (NEN) is one of the main ways of biological diversity conservation in the conditions of a highly transformed landscape of Moldova, the extreme fragmentation of natural and semi-natural ecosystems, and at the same time with`islands` of floral and faunal richness. Therefore, physical formation of the National Ecological Network is a task of the entire country and requires the involvement of local communities. Project goal - Strengthening the national and local capacities in forming the National Ecological Network of Moldova, and the involvement of local communities in protected areas management. The project will be implemented by BIOTICA Ecological Society in collaboration with local NGO Renasterea and public authorities of Talmaza, Cioburciu and Popeasca villages (Stefan-Voda district). Implementation area is the Lower Dniester Ramsar Site that possesses the highest biodiversity among protected areas of the country. The project will finalize the development of major methodological tools for the NEN planning and create opportunities for local communities to build in nature the local sectors of ecological network for integrity of ecological corridors in the Ramsar Site and to support generation of alternative incomes. The project will designate also habitats of European importance, increase local capacity of environmental management and raise awareness. As result of the project, the Guidance on assessment of the NEN core areas and the core areas of the NEN local sectors will be developed and submitted to the Ministry of Environment. Three forest nurseries with local species will be created for local communities in the Lower Dniester Ramsar Site to be used for improving the NEN integrity at the local level. About 15 ha of water protective forest corridors will be reconstructed along the Dniester at the expense of co-financing influencing positively the biodiversity on more than 60 thousand hectares of the Ramsar Site. Zoning of the Ramsar Site will be improved and about 1200 ha of habitats of the European importance designated.
