Food and Trees for Zambia (FTFZ) is a non-profit organization formed in September 2001 to address urban/community forestry, food security and rural development in Zambia. It is registered as an association incorporated under section 7 (1) of the Societies Act of the Laws of Zambia. FTFZ recently implemented a food security component that was funded by Lumwana Mine. Food and Trees for Zambia s aims are: To involve at least 10% of the Zambian community in greening projects To create environmental awareness amongst all communities in Zambia. To develop sustainable models of best practice showcasing urban greening, green schools, perm culture and energy plantations in all Zambian provinces. To contribute to Environmental education at Schools through the design, implementation and management of sustainable greening (parks) and food garden projects through the Eco~Schools programme FTFZ has during its inception facilitated several tree planting initiatives during the commemoration of National Tree Planting Month, World Environment Day, and World Forestry Day. FTFZ has since facilitated the establishment of a community park in North mead/ Luangwa that was funded by the Royal Danish Embassy. FTFZ was also identified as an implementing partner by Embassy of Sweden to facilitate urban greening initiatives in Chaisa unplanned urban township of Lusaka. Other projects included but not limited i.e. Co consultancy to conduct baseline social survey impact on Copper mining in Lumwana Solwezi, Co consultancy to conduct baseline social survey impact on uranium mining in Lumwana Solwezi, Forest livelihood Diversification social survey Lumwana Solwezi and Agri Food Innovators project Lumwana Solwezi.. 2. Project s main objective 2.1 To create environmental awareness and promote climate change adaptation strategies through community workshops and other greening initiatives such as promotion of sustainable agriculture, fish farming, beekeeping, and schools greening competition in the catchment area. 3. Specific Objectives 3.1 To ensure sustainable utilisation of forest resources for fuel wood production 3.2 To increase incomes and assets of households dependent on forestry resources 3.3 To ensure conservation of natural resources through environmental education for the benefit of present and future generations 3.4 To ensure gender equity in the management, production and use of the natural resources 3.5 To control exploitation of the natural resources in order to ensure sustainability. 3.6 To rehabilitate degradation areas through tree planting (greening) and camp clean up 3.7 To promote soil conservation measure in order to ensure food security at household level through sustainable Agriculture methods practices (Agro forestry practices). 3.8 To Sensitizing the local leaders and communities on forest policy and law, and importance of conserving natural resources
