Foya Dundu was once covered entirely with rainforest. Unfortunately, the forest has been reduced to scrub and guinea grass. The major agents of this loss is slash-and burn farming and land rotation system of farming in which farmers moved from land to land every year in search for fertile spots to grow crops. This is a big problem that needs be tackled with intensive education on better methods of cropping. It is also on record that an Israeli agriculture company, AGRIMENCO and LPMC have been part of the problem. These groups operated in Foya District in the decades of the 70s and 80s. Large tracks of forest land lying east of Guinea, were cut down ostensively to plant rice and oil palm, these projects never took off. These groups left Foya due to political interference coupled with imminent civil war without cropping the deforested areas. This action also paved way for the guinea grass to spread as fast as wild fire and now the entire Foya District including Foya Dundu is covered with this grass. Action is therefore needed by planting fast growing leguminous trees in the like of the cassia species and also the introduction of better farming practices that are soil-centered instead of crop centered.
