Project Description
GOAL To revitalize Bumiaji Sub-district as an upstream area of Brantas Watershed by applying community-based and sustainable Brantas Watershed conservation OBJECTIVES Objective 1 : To accelerate the revitalization of nature condition in Batuaji as an effort to protect Brantas Watershed Indikator : 1. The following plants: Thick and dense type of plants: Mindi (Melia azedarach L.) 1200 trees, Casuarina 200 trees, Langon 1200 trees, Bamboo 300 trees, Sengon Laut (Memosaceae) 500 trees, and Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba) 400 trees. Hardwood: Apple 1000 trees, Kesemek (Asian Persimmon) 400 trees, Durian 900 trees, and Breadfruit (400 trees). are planted in critical areas in Sumber Brantas, Bumiaji, and Tulung Rejo 2. Existing pilot project of 12 infiltration wells in each three villages. 3. Existing pilot project of 14 biopori system (small tunnel or pore found underground of a healthy soil and created by tree roots and soil organisms) in each three villages 4. At least 12 persons in each three villages understand the method to build infiltration well and are able to teach other people 5. At least 14 persons in each three villages understand the method to build biopori holes and are able to teach other people at least in the village 6. Existing plan to maintain the conservation area and agreed by the community live in the area. The plan is made during participatory meeting and signed by the representative of respected community. Kegiatan : 1. Implementing land conservation by using vegetative method The method will combine two mechanisms, interception to transform high intensity but short period of rain into longer period but lower intensity and infiltration to increase the capacity of groundwater by holding more water in the aquifers and slowly released as spring water. The method is matched for Batu area since the majority of area is for plantation and forest. Thorough review on the condition of the land is needed to identify type of plants that is suitable in the working location by considering the economical, hydrological, aesthetics, and cultural aspects. The working area for this is three following villages: Sumberbrantas, Tulungrejo, and Bulukerto, that located in Bumiaji sub-District that is also functioned as water catchment area. 2. Implementing land conservation by using constructive method a. Infiltration well The well is made to collect and absorb rainfall into the ground. Some of the objectives of this well are: - to reserve the excessive surface water in the ground - to repair the groundwater quality - to increase the production of groundwater for drinking or other purposes - to reduce the operational cost of pump by increasing the surface of groundwater - to avoid land subsidence The well will be constructed in three villages, Sumberbrantas, Tulungrejo, and Bulukerto, with 12 wells in each village. b. Waste processing through biopori system Biopori is small tunnel or pore found underground of a healthy soil and created by tree roots and soil organisms. The tunnel will be filled with air and act as the media for groundwater to go through and smoothing the water infiltration process to the water. The system will be applied by creating vertical and cylindrical holes in the home garden with 10 cm diameter and 100 cm depth. The holes will be filled with organic waste to produce the bio-pores and to trigger the natural pores for the subsequent process. The hole will be constructed in three villages, Sumberbrantas, Tulungrejo, and Bulukerto, with 14 wells in each village. Both activities will be done together with community to increase their capacity in doing land conservation by implementing constructive method. It is expected that the community can tap the knowledge and teach others in order to replicate such method. 4. Planning the maintenance method with community The plan include participatory meeting with community to come up with maintenance planning. It will also include the responsibility, ownership, and border of the conservation area. Objective 2 : To strengthen the role of neighboring community to be involved in conserving the water resources and Brantas Watershed Indikator : 1. Community are able to understand and realize the importance of clean water and Brantas Watershed conservation and willing to become volunteer in taking part of the conservation 2. Existing community group with the form of Cooperative, comprising of household wives with members of 20-30 persons per village 3. Basic organizational trainings are implemented once in each three villages and involve at least 90% of the group members 4. Existing pilot project of environmentally sound agriculture system 5. Existing system for revolving fund management and pilot for biogas unit 6. Inter-sectoral discussion between three villages are implemented 7. Campaign for cleaning the river is implemented, including movie screening, story-telling, trees planting, and public river cleaning 8. Trainings on waste management and processing are implemented once in each three villages and involve at least 90% of the group members 9. There is example from waste development into product with economical values 10. There is plan to develop household scale business for every working group by utilizing waste that has economical values Kegiatan : 1. Strengthening community participation in Brantas Watershed conservation a. Forming a group/cooperative in each village This is important to make the project management easier and more effective.
