Implementing NGO/CBO: Baan Kwao Saving Group (BKSG): Established in 2008 as a registered community-based organization to serve as community financial institute supporting community livelihood activities which are environmentally-friendly. Location of project: Phu Khiew Forest of about 250 ha, a community forest and buffer zone of the 156,000-ha Phu Khiew Wildlife Sanctuary in Chaiyaphum Province. Communities surrounding the forest depend , to a greater extent, upon the provision of the forest in term of nutritious medicinal and timbering species. The location has been under threats from unsustainable use and conflicts among sectors. Target Population:11,472 families from 51 villages who earn living through agricultural practices- paddy farming, seasonal crop - and husbandry and provide general services. 480 families from 19 villages directly participate in the project. Per capita income is THB: 12,000. Main Activities to be carried out: 1.Launching technical capacity building of targeted population through training, study tours and open forum 2. Launching demonstration of conservation activities through forest zoning, regulations for use, reforestation, alternative livelihoods, etc 3. Launching dissemination of project results 4. Launching participatory evaluation/ knowledge management Anticipated Results and Indicators: 1.Increased capacity and awareness of targeted population witnessed by ability to collaborate with concerned authorities , to formulate community forest management plan and to articulate plans, transfer knowledge ( by 190 core leaders of 10 organizations) 2. Evinced reduction of conflict among sectors in land and forest use 3. The targeted location of 250 ha being co-managed to sustain 12 medicinal species, 8 native trees,7 nutritious species and 11 native animal species 4. Witnessed sustained conservation activities ( religious rite, traditional practice, forest surveillance, etc.) on an annual basis
