PROJECT DEVELOPMENT GOAL: Strengthening role of community organization and increasing their involvement to protect and to manage mangrove forest in Batu Ampar, Kuburaya District, West Kalimantan PROJECT OBJECTIVES: 1. Strengthening Koperasi Panter community organization (Panter Cooperative) in Batu Ampar to manage and to protect mangrove forest in Batu Ampar, Kuburaya District, West Kalimantan. 2. Planning capacity building activities for Koperasi Panter, especially regarding internal management of the organization and marketing scheme of products produced by Batu Ampar community 3. Mapping alternative livelihood for community to reduce dependency on mangrove resources especially wood. 4. Formulating activity plan to implement the alternative livelihood that already identified in the previous mapping. 5. Formulating activity plan to increase community awareness on the importance of mangrove forest protection. EXPECTED OUTPUTS: 1. Strengthening Panter Cooperative with the following indicators: more frequent meeting among members, reducing frictions among members, and better communication among members and between members and non-members. 2. Existing activity plan to strengthen function and organization of Panter Cooperative, especially regarding internal management of the organization and marketing scheme of products resulted by Batu Ampar community and its surrounding 3. Identification of alternative livelihood feasible for Batu Ampar community based on community groups, both based on gender or based on previous livelihood 4. Existing activity plan to implement alternative livelihood identified in the previous activity 5. Existing activity plan to raise community awareness on the importance of mangrove forest conservation. ACTIVITIES TO BE CONDUCTED: 1. Performing internal discussion among members of cooperative and general discussion to obtain solution on problems currently faced by Panter Cooperative 2. Implementing survey for training on internal management of the organization and marketing scheme of products for Panter Cooperative 3. Performing rapid rural appraisal to identify potential natural resources and socio-economical map in Batu Ampar area that can be used and developed for alternative livelihood 4. Formulating training plan to utilize non-forest mangrove products such as training on mangrove crafts, training on food processing by using fish and mangrove forest products, training on crafts from coconut, and training to utilize coconut fibre as planting media 5. Formulating plan to develop community forest (rubber plantation, Acacia, Laban (Vitex cofassus)) on less productive land to cultivate water biota such as snapper, Nile tilapia, grouper by using keramba apung (floating fish cages) system in Batu Ampar water area 6. Performing outreach, discussion, and obtaining solution to create Protected Forest Watcher Group, identifying area borders, and repairing its condition and position. PROJECT PARTICIPANTS AND/OR BENEFICIARIES: Indirect beneficiaries: 100 household of Batu Ampar community Direct beneficiaries: - Members of cooperative: 100 persons - Women group: 30 persons - Fisher members and village officers: 20 persons
