Project Description
Project Description
The entire Bahamas is considered a coastal zone. The health of our marine and coastal environment has direct impacts on the environmental, social and economic well-being of every Bahamian. Each year particularly during the month of April, the Coastal Awareness Committee commits itself to focus on one of the five threats which effect several different habitats in our coastal environment. A theme is developed around the particular threat and activities are coordinated to educate the general public regarding the threat to our coastal resources. The five threats the committee focuses on are as follows: Pollution Climate Change Overfishing Invasive Species Habitat Destruction For this grant project, the committee will focus on two areas: climate change and pollution. The committee will focus on waste reduction by eliminating some of the materials that are disposed of in the landfills by using recycling processes (crushing cans, reducing green waste and reducing cardboards entering the landfills). The committee will also focus on climate change through our beach restoration project to mitigate the effect of erosion to our coastline.
